PROGRAMME DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Public health remains high on public, political and professional agendas. Preparing for a flu pandemic, learning from SARS, halting the epidemic of obesity and improving the poor air quality are just a few of issues facing society today not just in Hong Kong but also across the world. Opportunities for education and learning about protecting population health and preventing disease are increasingly important as a challenge of providing equitable and affordable healthcare based on evidence.
The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC) is the first and the only comprehensive school built and dedicated to public health in Hong Kong. The focus of our work is postgraduate education, training and research. We are pleased to offer courses and degrees across all areas of public health practice. Based on the definition of public health as the science and art of promoting health and preventing disease through organized efforts of individuals and society, we have reshaped our Master of Public Health (MPH). We offer all students grounding in professionally recognized competencies and in areas increasingly recognized as core to public health. We also offer courses in areas of special interest - including epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion, health management. We also collaborate with colleagues in other Faculties of the University. Our aim is to provide opportunities for all those interested in learning more about public health.
International health research expertise and interests of our school members range from comparative health policy, designing sustainable health care systems, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, reproductive health, children’s health, prevention and control of infectious diseases during natural disasters, wars or civil conflicts, and the programme is the first of this nature in China. Aside from benefiting from strong research ties and network with the Mainland China, our school members have also been providing public health policy consultation and conducting collaborative research projects in UK, US, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Kosovo, Timor, Mindanao Philippines, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Kashmir Pakistan, and Qatar. The JCSPHPC has extensive international links and students will benefit from its formal and informal network with worldwide experts.
